David L. Boyd is serving his second term on the Orange County Board of Education. In defeating a two-term incumbent, he relied on a grassroots, largely Internet, campaign emphasizing fiscal responsibility, tolerance, and respect. He was easily re-elected in 2014 receiving over 50% of the vote from voters in every school district in his Trustee Area.
Mr. Boyd earned a Bachelor of Science degree from California State University at Long Beach and a Juris Doctor degree from Western State University College of Law. In 1993 Mr. Boyd completed post-graduate studies in Constitutional Law and English Legal History at Harvard Law School. He is a member of the State Bar of California and is a licensed certified public accountant.
Mr. Boyd’s political philosophy is one of limited government and strict accountability.
For over thirty years it has been Mr. Boyd’s privilege to lead The Taft University System (http://www.TaftU.edu/), first as President and beginning in January 2012, as Chancellor. The Taft University System includes Taft Law School and William Howard Taft University. It presently offers distance education programs in business, education, and law utilizing advancing technologies to provide educational opportunities to individuals around the world. Mr. Boyd is particularly proud of Taft’s Master of Education and Doctor of Education Programs which were developed through major contributions from leading Orange County public school administrators and faculty.
Since 2003, Mr. Boyd has served on the Educational Standards Committee of the Distance Education and Training Council, a national accrediting body recognized by the United States Department of Education. Over the decades he has been selected to serve on numerous university site visitation teams by accrediting bodies and state agencies.
In 2004 Mr. Boyd was appointed by the Board of Governors of the State Bar of California to a three-year term as the sole distance learning law school representative to the California Law School Council. The Law School Council was organized to act as a liaison between California law schools and the Committee of Bar Examiners. It deals with matters relating to content and format of the bar examination and on all aspects of law school education relevant to the bar examination process as well as other items of interest and importance to the law school community.
Mr. Boyd has also served as a mediator and arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association and has been recognized by the AAA for his service to the organization.
From July 2011 through June 2014, Mr. Boyd served on the Board of Directors of the Orange County School Boards Association.
In October 2013 Mr. Boyd earned the California School Boards Association’s prestigious Master of Governance certificate having completed a two-year program that provides school board members with the necessary knowledge and skills to support an effective governance structure.
Mr. Boyd donates the monthly stipend he receives for his service to the Board to Orange County school booster clubs, student groups, Little Leagues, and other non-profit organizations serving local children.
Nationally Mr. Boyd and his wife Patricia have been listed as Platinum Circle donors by The Stuttering Foundation, the largest nonprofit charitable organization in the world working toward the prevention and improved treatment of stuttering (www.stutteringhelp.org)
He is also major donor to Children of the Night, a privately funded non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing America’s children from the ravages of prostitution (www.childrenofthenight.org). In 2013 he was elected to the Board of Directors of this organization.
The Boyd’s reside in Costa Mesa. They have three adult children who all graduated from Orange County public schools.
