Message from the Dean

Welcome to the W. Edwards Deming School of Business at William Howard Taft University. William Deming’s (1900-1993) significant contributions to the theory of quality improvement include, among other things, the Fourteen Points for Quality Improvement and the System of Profound Knowledge.

Deming’s Theory of Profound Knowledge consists of four parts: appreciation for a system, knowledge about variation, theory of knowledge, and knowledge of psychology. He believed in what Gestalt Theorists stated as: the whole is different and/or greater than the sum of its parts. He knew that in order to improve/change/or fix a system, you have to understand it first.

Deming helped create a system that proved to be holistic and dynamic, and is still used around the world in industry, government, and academia alike. Dr. Deming was also known for his many quotes, and the following is one of my favorites: “It is not enough to do your best; you must know what to do, and then do your best.” This quote that can be easily applied to your business studies here at William Howard Taft University. We are committed to helping you in acquiring the knowledge needed in order to do your best and become the best in your future endeavors.

Dr. Cassard has spent the past twenty years building bridges between higher education and the global business environment to empower people of all backgrounds to work together and become successful citizens.

ABOUT DR. CASSARD

Dr. Anita Cassard began her business career managing long term care facilities and a licensed home health care agency operating in New York state, which included providing medical staff to hospitals as well as the hub nine prison system.

Dr. Cassard then spent over a decade at Cornell University’s Department of Agricultural Engineering and NY-FarmNet providing the agricultural community with a network of contacts and support services. She also appeared in a video aired on public television stations nationwide that highlighted the valuable services provided.

One of Dr. Cassard’s more unusual adventures dealt with spearheading the transition of a for-profit corporation to a non-profit, charitable corporation that specialized in the development of a train-the-trainer program for public school physical education teachers. A 5th degree Black Belt (Go-Dan) herself, she felt that it was important for the organization to address character education and violence prevention in public schools throughout the United States. The program was the first of its kind to become accredited by the NY State Department of Education.

As co-owner and Vice President of a small business she designed, produced, and trademarked an original product for mass production (CarGoyles). This taught her how to manage every aspect of start-up operations including raw materials procurement, packaging design, arranging for mass production in China, obtaining a private-label distributor, account acquisition, contract and price negotiations, customs, and shipping.

Dr. Cassard’s philanthropic endeavors led her to Dominica in the West Indies, where by invitation of the Prime Minister, Secretary of Education, and Carib Chief, she provided recommendations on how to develop a framework for analyzing consumer behavior and market demand, production and cost, and how to promote the indigenous crafts produced by women of the tribe. Similar trips to Costa Rica included presenting business workshops on defining leadership strategy to understand and solve complex issues in an international business setting.

In 2014 Dr. Cassard joined with the United Nations to debut the GIFT box project in NYC, a traveling exhibit that was slated for display in all major cities in the USA. The project brings awareness to the public about human trafficking.

Over the years Dr. Cassard has served on numerous organizational boards in healthcare, education, and business in the not-for-profit as well as for profit sector. She believes in an authentic management style, emphasizing the importance of teamwork and creating positive environments for groups by connecting the best matching styles of people to each other.
